Thanks for the Free Publicity, “Cult Of The Hugging Saint” Exposed
I have to say I am highly amused by the well-meaning but completely counterproductive "defenders" of Amma who think that somehow bashing Amma's critics will make Amma look better. These guys have put up a blog called “Cult Of The Hugging Saint” Exposed - and in it, they will mercilessly trash and slander anyone who dares post a negative review of Amma and her activities.
I don't know why these guys think doing this helps Amma. It only proves her critics right. People who are feeling unconditionally loving don't waste their precious time and energy slamming individuals who are simply expressing their free speech rights to critique.
AMMA GUYS - GET A CLUE: YOUR BLOG MAKES AMMA LOOK BAD. REALLY, REALLY BAD.
So after my post here on Amma, these guys must have wasted not just hours but days if not a week or more of time to slog through all my Internet properties and write this very horrifying Stephanie Brail expose. OMIGOD! I sell Reiki attunements!! Horror! Oh yeah, and I do like David Icke. I don't agree with everything he says, but I still dig him. Go throw me off a cliff, why don't you?
Oh, and I'll just put all the real dirt out there to take wind out of their sails: I have bad credit, owe taxes, have made sex tapes with ex-boyfriends, and have done other stupid things just like other human beings. I also have a judgment against me from some psycho client of mine who tried to stalk me, and I was too afraid to go to the court to fight for myself.
NOW that we have all my big secrets exposed, you can go read their critique for yourself here...frankly, I didn't even get through all of it but just managed to skim it...it is that long-winded and dull. It's amazing how these guys can even make my own life boring to ME:
http://cult-of-the-hugging-saint-exposed.blogspot.com/2009/07/stephanie-...
However, I did read the end, which I will respond to just because:
And yet, who is Stephanie Brail? She is practically unknown to the general public, unable to draw any crowd to herself despite her widely alleged healing abilities (which all come with a price tag).
I actually prefer to be unknown to the general public, and have kept a low profile on purpose. That's because I am not interested in being a guru!
As for price tags: I offer plenty of free things, but also do not have any problem selling my services. Amma, on the other hand, offers "free" hugs but solicits donations and sells Amma swag to fund her activities. She also utilizes volunteers and pays no taxes, keeping her overhead low and profits high.
As a matter of fact, on Stephanie Brail’s testimonials page, only 7 people are listed (4 of which are anonymous).
Actually, the real reason I don't have more testimonials is that I just don't get around to posting the testimonials I do have, and I also forget to solicit them as well. It's bad marketing on my part, I know, but not really an indication of failure as a Reiki Master.
It would seem that Stephanie Brail’s attacks against Amma are rooted in jealousy since her aspirations to become a Guru (as evidenced by her pervasive internet solicitations) have thus far proven ineffective.
Um, no. Sorry. I have absolutely NO INTEREST in being worshipped with a ridiculous crown on my head while people fawn at my feet. Nope. Not interested. I prefer to be relatively anonymous. I have no interest in being a celebrity. I like being able to go the grocery store with no make-up and not have anyone taking snapshots of me. Don't want to be Amma, no way, no how.
So here's the kicker:
How better to draw internet traffic to one’s website than by trashing & bashing an internationally renowned humanitarian and well respected Saint from India, all the while harping about one’s psychic abilities with side-menu links that promote & promise all kinds of healings from a distance?
Hey, how better to draw traffic than to have some overzealous "defender of Amma" draw traffic FOR YOU by posting a bunch of hoo-ha that most people won't believe and will only make them sympathize with you? Thanks for the FREE HITS, guys. You're giving me thousands of dollars of free advertising (if not much more) with your attacks and blog post.
Now tell me again how Amma is about unconditional love? You guys have just given credence to everything I said about Amma with your nasty behavior.
If you would like to discuss Amma and other gurus (pro and con), please post your comments on this thread:

The Moreno Monster
Moreno must have 10 computers going at once with all of the cyberstalking he does. He is a cyber terrorist, no doubt. Imagine what a sad and lonely life it must take to spend your days and nights compulsively gathering, filing, and organizing MASSIVE AMOUNTS of information on complete strangers? I can just imagine him sitting there typing "Stephanie Brail" over and over again into the Google search engine as he sits bleary eyed and half-drooling over his keyboard. You almost want to feel bad for the guy. Imagine living a life like that? Well, at least he is driving a lot of traffic to your site and getting a lot more negative publicity for himself---and for Amma. He is, after all, her puppet. That's what she does you know. She uses anyone with a weakness (mental illness, psychosis etc.) as her puppet. Looks like she picked a very good puppet in Mr. Moreno.
What I don't understand...
...is how he thinks he is helping Amma by his attacks on private individuals. His blog is probably singlehandedly chasing more people AWAY from Amma than my one little blog post, which would have gone mostly unnoticed except for his attack on me.
I have to tell you, when I was first trying to figure out what the real deal was with Amma, I saw his blog attacking people like Bronte Baxter, and it actually made me more convinced that Amma was not good energy.
So that's what really blows my mind - that he thinks he is helping Amma! He would help Amma MUCH MORE if he just took his blog down and stopped attacking people.
Sometimes you have to wonder if he's not actually a fan of Amma, but the opposite - someone who hates Amma so much that he's willing to go and attack Amma's critics so that Amma's supporters look TOTALLY PSYCHO.
Could that be? Because I can't imagine that any sane person is going to read his blog and come to the conclusion that Amma is someone they want to follow.
A far better approach would be to simply post some positive things about Amma, how much good she has done, how she has changed the lives for the better, etc. etc. Share some personal stories about how Amma has touched lives - THAT is a productive way to defend Amma. Slandering people, on the other hand, is seriously BAD for Amma.
I am frankly still blown away that I have not had more people post anything here defending Amma - I had one person who got very attacking and still had nothing "good" to say about Amma, only bad things to say about her critics.
If there are genuine Amma supporters reading this, you might want to have a talk with your more zealous counterparts and let them know that blogging hate against Amma's critics is making Amma look bad. Maybe he'll listen to other Amma supporters...certainly, I'm not inclined to like Amma more due to his frothing at the mouth.
I have half a mind to contact Amma's American PR people and let them know what he's up to, maybe they'll talk some sense into him. Because he's a total embarrassment to Amma, without a doubt.
just some thoughts....
amma devotees are notorious for attacking critics. this is not anything new. this has been going on for quite some time. look at the green avenue beatings, for one. the ex-amma group has to be tightly moderated for this reason. i would not be too shocked to find out that ammachi's pr team actually hired gerald moreno to run these sites. they really do froth at the mouth over critics. because they are afraid of the truth coming out, the sales dropping, etc. do you know the story of the malayalam writer sreeni pattathanam? this was some years ago, but he was a critic of ammachi and look at the hell this person went through. of course, he is from india, not so protected by the 1st amendment as we are here.
there are rumors of ammachi "getting rid of" her own brother because he was critical of her. i do not know the specifics in regard to this or the truth of it....perhaps someone else here can clarify?
the sreeni pattathanam case
http://www.countercurrents.org/hr-pattathanam040404.htm
devotees who leave are attacked just as harshly as critics. probably because they are afraid ex devotees will turn into critics.
do not forget this....amma has a financial empire to protect, the indian government in her back pocket, and thousands of western "slaves" running all of it. consider this when wondering why her critics are attacked with such zeal and cruelty. it is not mindless. they have been "trained" this way. it would not be exaggeration to say that amma could replicate the jonestown suicides with one tip of her crown. she has great power, yes. but not for good.
she wants a team of western slaves building her empire but is p.o'ed that we have freedom of speech here and that the internet can be used to be critical of her. do you know that on many times she has been heard insulting westerners who are crawling up to her for darshan? calling them fat, stupid, etc? she does this in her native tongue, but many people have reported this over the years. she is very foul-mouthed, swearing in her native tongue. if you could speak malayalam and stood by her while she gave darshan you would cry. she is not what she appears to be this is certain. good for you for putting and keeping the truth out for all eyes to see. i hope more people will do this. the cult site is good but more people need to come out and say this is wrong.
Well....
You know, it seems a cool difference to them to point out that Stephanie Brail is a "self proclaimed" reiki master, and Amma is a....has the Vatican ordained her a saint? I kinda looked around and didn't see that.
Plus, just because someone "self proclaims" doesn't make it untrue. Do we dispute that Michael Jackson, the "Self Proclaimed" King of Pop was NOT the King of Pop?
Actually, to clarify about being a Reiki Master
I am not a "self-proclaimed" Reiki Master. I was trained and certified by another Reiki Master. I still have my certificates to prove it. So there was no "self" proclamation. It is a title bestowed once you have gone through level 3 of Reiki training.
I could proclaim myself "Mighty Awesome Cool Chick" but I think that is self-evident. ;-)
self-proclaimed
What is that guys obsession with "self-proclaimed". Everyone on the site is a "self-proclaimed" something or other according to this guy. There's the self-proclaimed psychic, self-proclaimed artist, self-proclaimed reiki master. How many times can you use the words "self-proclaimed" on one website?
That site makes the guy look like a self-proclaimed loon.
Imagine how much time he spends at the computer to dig up every trace anyone has ever had on the Internet. He must have a very large ass. The guy must get a tan from his computer screen.
"Amma is a....has the Vatican
"Amma is a....has the Vatican ordained her a saint? I kinda looked around and didn't see that."
Hillarious, yet true.
I am pretty certain she is a "self-proclaimed" saint.
Look In The Mirror
What a bunch of whinies!
Critics think they are perfectly entitled to trash, bash, defame and criticize Amma to their hearts content yet expect no response from anyone regarding their behaviors, beliefs and internet activities! Tough luck.
If someone says one word about Amma's critics, they are publicly labeled "internet terrorists" and "monsters"! Amma's critics cannot practice the love and tolerance they love to preach and demand of others.
Instead of whining, do the research for yourselves. Point out the exact "slanders" and "untruths" published on the "Cult Of The Hugging Saint Exposed" blog and let me know (email is listed on the profile page).
If critics do not want any public attention drawn to themselves, they should not be making public posts under their names. Period. If critics think that blogged articles about them draw more traffic to their websites and actually help their cause, they should be thankful to "Cult Of The Hugging Saint Exposed" blog. Now shouldn't they?
Thanks for the traffic FeeGoodGirl!
Missing the point!!
I think you are missing the point, dear. You aren't helping your cause. People here are MOCKING you. You aren't helping Amma. You look foolish. Seriously.
Be more productive if you want to help Amma. Everything you are doing is backfiring. The way to respond to Amma's critics is to respond to their POINTS with as much FACTUAL information as you have. Don't resort to character attacks - they only make you look insane and crazy.
PS
Oh, and as for the slanders and untruths you published about me, I seriously doubt you would fix them if I asked. I simply don't think I need to defend myself, because your characterization of me is so completely over the top, most sane people aren't going to take your side, they'll take mine.
THIS GUY DOESN'T GET IT!
There is a big difference between criticizing a public figure, shedding light on facts, and speaking about your personal experiences-- and what Moreno is doing.
Cyberstalking involves the gathering of information with the motive of harassing others. In other words, it has no motive other than to assassinate someones character. It usually involves the compulsive compiling of information on individuals and stalking them all around the Internet. This is how Moreno has come to earn the name of net terrorist.
People With Opinions & Stalkers:TWO ENTIRELY DIFFERENT BALLS OF WAX!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
How this man cannot see the difference defies logic.
It would be like some random person writing an article about how McDonalds food is bad for you, and how they gained weight from it. Then a person who likes McDonalds comes along and makes a website about THAT person and gathers their entire life and places it on a webpage. The person makes no effort to counteract the negative statements made in the McDonalds complaint--they just stalk the personal life of the person who made the post. What is the point? So the person blogged about pudding three years ago, has a few websites where they sell their wares, and once wrote a poem about shoe fetishes. SO WHAT.
All of this is IRRELEVANT, POINTLESS, PSYCHOTIC and makes Amma look horrible, therefore proving everything critical that has been posted about her and her group.
As for this Moreno person, it just makes him look like he is in need of psychological help. Sane individuals do not spend so much time obsessed with people they do not know. Just glancing at those sites, you have to figure he spent at least a week or more (of 8 hour days at the computer) on each person in order to compile all of that info. And what about the info? IT IS IRRELEVANT. All human beings have lives, careers, and interests. The fact that critics of Amma also have lives, careers, and interests is not really that groundbreaking....nor does it seem worthy of an entire website or websites.
Congratulations Moreno, you are showing the world PRECISELY what a devotee acts like when confronted with criticism.
If Amma wants tax exemption and US Dollars
If Amma wants the benefits given by the laws and democracy of the United States of America, such as (401)k tax exemption, which she gets away with--that means that because of the generosity of US democracy, she can claim sheis a reliogious entity and not for profit and thus by not paying taxes and getting all sorts of devotee labor from volunteers, whom she reportedly UNDERFEEDS--she can accumulate non taxed wealth at a faster rate than those of us peasants who do pay taxes.
So...lemme tell Amma's vicious devotees what I am jealous of.
I am not jealous of Amma.
I am jealous that I pay taxes and she does not and that she's a fucking millionairess because she claims herself a religious entity, and has a bunch of unspiritual gangster devotees who slander people like Stephanie and beat people up on Green Street in Delhi.
If Amma wants to enjoy the benefits of US democracy in the form of her being able to suck up piles of tax exempt US dollars, she is gonna have to accept that part of her karma in coming to the US, claiming tax exemption and attaching herself like a big fat LEECH to the trustful body politic of US democracy is...she is gonna have to accept the US First Amendment and freedom to express opinion.
And...anyone who does pay taxes indirectly supports Amma and her platoon of internet gangsters and lathi wielding goonda thugs in India.
So even those of us who are not involved personally with Amma, indirectly support her and pay for her gold crown with our US tax monies.
So we have a right to say what we think about this.
And, regarding fame and power, there is nothing to envy. Colin Wilson, in his book Rogue Messiahs demonstrates that the more fame and power leaders get, the more empty and frustrated they feel.
That is why they are insatiable and need more and more new recruits.
Just like Amma.
There is nothing to envy.
And when she gets old and falters, she will be surrounded by relatives fighting for her money and even when old and sick, she will be propped up and forced to appear in public, just the way Pope John Paul II was--because her mere presence generates money and her greedy entourage will not want her to stop.
She will lose control of all this while she is still alive, unless she is very lucky and escapes from the imprisonment of her role, her greedy entourage and her greedy relatives, by dying in her sleep from a heart attack.
Colin Wilson stated that most gurus tend to die in harness. They cant take a day off or give up the role.
There is nothing at all to envy about that.
Cothse and Cothsee (one e versus two ee's)
On another venue, some discussion about Amma came up.
A correspondant there suggested that there may be two different persons using a similar handle which differs by just one letter of the alphabet.
Read the contents of the link given below and decide for yourselves.

Anyone whose devotees feel moved to engage in cruelty online is a false spiritual teacher.
If someone were genuinely channelling and serving the Divine, their devotees would *lose interest* in being aggressive online, and they would NEVER equate aggression with love and service.
Only devotees of a false avatar would ever make this mistake.
EX-AMMA , EX-BABA,EX-HiNDU
Dear Stephanie ! Many People are waking up to the real truth ...after Michael Jackson's death - a HUGE Light and LOVE-WAVE entered our hearts all around the globe , and many more people are waking up ! I am an EX-Babaji -Devotee ( www.babaji.net , www.babajicalling.com ) and your articles about AMMA have educated me further about the dark side of hinduism and Guruism .... Thank You So Much for Exposing The Cult of Amma for what it is : a fashist organisation ! Thank you and we are not alone because we alligned ourselves to High Matter Frequency in Christ and not to dark matter frequency in Shiva ... Thank GOD! With all my Love and solidarity from Nina Hagen .( www.ninahagen.com ,http://ninahagen.beeplog.de ,www.myspace.com/whymeohlord )
Thank you, Nina!
You rock! (Literally!) How amazing it is to have you post here. We used to play your stuff on our college radio station all the time (OK now I am aging myself, this was in the early 90s). I went to your website, and I'm glad you are sharing the NWO info. Keep spreading the word!
Are alarmist blanket comments on whole spiritual systems useful?
Hmmm...being someone of Indian origin who has been involved with a lot of human rights work, I certainly understand the need to look at "guru-ism" on a deep level and consider some of the violations of the human spirit that can occur when we unquestioningly follow a spiritual leader or lionize them as incarnations of God, thereby surrendering our agency. I am extremely critical of this, and I've witnessed the mindless adherence to gurus in places like Amma's ashram. But to equate "light energy" with Christ and "dark energy" with Shiva seems like a stretch. Yes, Shiva does represent some of the darker impulses of the human psyche but he's a deity that's far too complex to reduce to a demonic force. I also take issue with the idea of applying this label to Hinduism itself, which encompasses so much more than one particular deity or guru.
I once went to a Christian youth group that my friend belonged to, as a teenager, and the vibe was very similar to walking into an Amma ashram. These were all believers in Christ, but that didn't make me automatically think of Christ as "dark energy," despite the sheer number of wars waged in his name. Perhaps the commenter has other experiences with Hinduism that make her wary of it, but it's important to be discriminating and attempt to extricate ancient wisdom (brought to us by lightworkers through the eons) from the practitioners who sully it and use it to evil ends (and this is done in Christianity as well as Hinduism)--rather than excoriate entire systems of belief entirely.
Hidden Shaivite Tantrism in Western Export Gurus
Hi Nina, you may have seen this on the other Amma article, but am reposting this in case you're interested.
Her article is entitled 'The Heart of the Secret'
It appears that Hinduism, as taught by many 'export gurus' who came to the West, concealed its tantric and Shivite core, to present a reassuring and respectable face to Westerners who were not equipped to know *how* to do background research..and who did not even know they needed to do any such thing.
First, this comment by Caldwell indicates to me, that she experienced energy theft from Muktananda and his rituals, despite the bliss she experienced at the time:
(quote)my guru was Swami Muktananda, that I gave him my whole heartand soul, that he taught me everything of ultimate value that I know, that I can never express the depth of the love and insight I gained in hispresence. Since his death everything else is a pale shadow, even now.(unquote)
If Muktananda had served the Divine and limitless Source of Life, Caldwell ought to have appreciated him, but in his absence, should still have felt life to be full of vitality, an endless gift, not 'a pale shadow.'
(quote)Even if, as Meditation Revolution’s authors would have it, the KaulaTantric substratum has been fully erased from Siddha Yoga underGurumayi’s leadership, our knowledge of Muktananda’s (and by asso-ciation, Gurumayi’s) past makes a full and open interrogation of thisaspect of Siddha Yoga imperative, both for scholars and for theologians ofthe tradition.50By such conscious acts of dissimulation, the heart of thesecret is not revealed. The Tantric core of so many of the last century’simported Hindu traditions has successfully been painted over with amore acceptable Shaiva or Vedantic veneer. The storehouse of powerthat is the Devi, the tortured fantasies of Ramakrishna’s dreams, andthe erotic generatrix of the universe that Baba sought in the bodies ofreal women, the coiled Kundalini Shakti herself, is not unleashed, notacknowledged, not known. This denial fuels an unhealthy form ofhypocrisy. Baba, at least in those final months as he was facing his immi-nent death, was raucously joyous about it, seemed eager to reveal it, torelease the secrets to the world, teasing, hinting, playing with the wholething. He enjoyed watching us all squirm. We were not ready for hismessage. We were not ready for Tantra.Such “Tantric dissembling” by groups such as the RamakrishnaOrder and Siddha Yoga is, then, part of a hoary tradition. Abhinavaguptahimself was the pivotal figure in the shift from medieval Kaula practices, openly celebrated by kings and courtesans, to a disguised, encoded, secret practice hidden within an outer, more socially acceptable form.(unquote)
http://74.125.47.132/search?q=cache:2GBtCbEr_u4J:www.leavingsiddhayoga.n...
Sarah Caldwell was in another Shivite Hindu order, led by Muktananda.
After Muktananda died, in 1982, his niece Gurumayi executed a coup and took control of SYDA yoga, and it is her ashram that is un-named but described in the current and popular book, "Eat Pray and Love'
A different take on Gurumayi is available via a memoir by Marta Szabo, entitled The Guru Looked Good.
The SYDA yogis launched a campaign of violent and vicious intimidation against Szabo, rather similar to the lovingkindness of the Amma people (whose guru may herself also be a hidden Shaivite. Note that Amma wears a necklace of Rudruksha and crystal beads. Rudruksha beads are worn by the Shaivites. Devotees of Vishnu customarily wear tulsi beads or sandalwood, NOT Rudruksha. In Tibetan Buddhism, it is noteworthy that Rudruksha bead malas are used only for wrathful deity meditations.)
Some contend that rudruksha is a pure manifestation of God and can be used for any devotion, whether to Vishnu or to Shiva. In Amma's giftshop one sees sandalwood malas for sale and rudruksha. However, I did not see a listing for tulsi/tulasi beads, which are, par excellance, associated with Vishnu.
(If anyone has fuller knowledge of what Amma keeps in stock and if she does have tulasi bead malas, let me know.)
Sandalwood malas are considered suitable for lay persons and all devotional purposes. Crystal is considered highly energizing.
Now, in a book published in 1976, by a team of anthropologists who lived at an ancient temple complex in Orissa, published as 'Hindu Monastic Life: The Monks and Monasteries of Bhubanesawar (David C Miller and Dororthy C Wertz), we have a survey of monks from a variety of traditions.
This is all the more valuable because the authors were there before that area of India was overrun by commercialized spiritual hucksters.
The anthropologists noted that there was some syncretism and one could not always make an absolute distinction between venerating Vishnu and venerating Shaiva.
But, they did describe what the monks wore and who their temple deities were.
And this may help us understand the significance of the beads worn by Amma--and for sale in her 'gift shops'
(Table 1) from page 4 of the Introduction)
*Shankara Dashanami
System of religion--Advaita Vedanta(nondualism)
Titulary deity (istapadevata)--Shiva, but sometimes syncretistic--monks wear an ochre (dark red or orange) loin cloth, necklace of 54 rudruksha beads, 3 horizontal white markings on forehead, single pronged staff (ekadanda)
*Ramananda Vairagin
Titulary deity--Sita and Rama
System--Vishitadvaita Vedanta(nondualism qualified by theism)
White dhoti (loin cloth or long skirt)of heavy cloth, necklace of 108 tulasi beads, 2 white and one red vertical marking on forehead, 3 pronged wooden staff (tridanda)
*Nimbarka Vairagin
Radha and Krishna
System of religion--Dvaita-Advaita Vedanta (dualistic non-dualism)
White dhoti, single 3/4 inch tulasi bead (on string around neck) U shaped white or black forehead marking
*Madhva Gaudiya Vairagin
Radha and Krishna
System of Religion
Dvaita Vedanta (dualism-Chaitanya calls it 'Acintyabhedabheda''incomprehensible monism)
White Dhoti; 3 strands of small tulasi beads; V shaped white forehead marking
**Tantric Yogi Sannyasin
Shakti Tantra (doctrine of power)
System of religion--Shakti-wife of Shiva
Ochre Loincloth (langoti)necklace of rudraksha beads, three pronged iron staff (trishula)
So...we need to ask which part of the Indian energy system Amma **actually** is tied to--not what she says she represents, but what she's actually linked to.
The monastics interviewed and observed by Miller were in Orissa, south of Bengal, and it looks as though the Shaivites wore rudraksha and the Vishnavas of the different traditions pretty clearly stuck with tulasi beads.
It should be noted that rudraksha beads are more expensive than other varieties and some, when they are excellent examples of their kind can cost hundreds of dollars.
So there may be a venal incentive for some rudraksha merchants to say that anyone can pray using Rudraksha--even those not devotees of either Shiva or Shakti.
By contrast, in his book, Light at the Center, published in the seventies, Agehananda Bharati, who was born in Austria and became a Shankara Dasnami monk and who later received tantric intitiation for real, stated in a footnote to the book,
'Rudraksha (red-eye)beads are made from the hard, dry berry Eleocarpus ganitrus. Each bead has five lines, representing the five faces of Shiva.
'Only monastic personnel are supposed to use the beads for Japa. Laymen should use beads made of sandalwood or some other substance--for them, the use of rudraksha is highly inauspicious.'
Then Bharati noted, 'nonwithstanding the fact that they are now being sold in Greenwich Village boutiques in New York City) Page 238, Light at the Center:Context and Pretext of Modern Mysticism, 1976)
